Music information retrieval research often focuses on music recommendations made by computers. Then again, many recommendations are also shared between human beings, of course. However, this "real-world music recommendation system" among human beings has not been scrutinzed as carefully as computerized music recommenders. How does musical taste spread? How does musical opinion diffuse within a network of friends and family?
Based upon a study of nineteen adolescents, Audrey Laplante's research suggests that musical taste spreads within a social network, and particularly, from those people who have deep musical knowledge, are musically involved, and stay up to date with recent musical trends.
